Kindergarten Teacher

16 Years Experience

My UJA Story...

Hi! Wendi Olivera, kindergarten teacher extraordinaire here! Okay, perhaps more like, silly lady with a passion for teaching and sharing.

I have been at Ukiah Junior Academy since 2006 when my first child began kindergarten. I started by volunteering and substituting and quickly developed a love for the school and staff. After taking part in a staff worship one day, I realized that they were not like the teachers I had experienced growing up. They seemed to genuinely care for not only the students, but their families' well-being. They were concerned about how the students were feeling, not just about how they scored on a test. The way they talked touched my heart. It was then that I decided I wanted to be part of this amazing school.

The next year I became a teacher's aide. I loved my job! Working with the kids and watching them actually enjoy school was such a great pleasure, I knew I wanted to have my own classroom and went back to college. (Special thanks to my husband and kids for their support in this big decision!)

After a few years of continuing as an aide and going to college, I got my degree! This is my seventh year as the kindergarten teacher at UJA. I love my job and covet this very special place where I get to work with the little ones.

It is my goal that all my students grow a love for learning, learn to care for others, and learn about the love of their friend Jesus. To do this, I endeavor to make every child feel welcome and loved each day in our classroom.

And of course, I thank God for the opportunity to be part this wonderful school!

A little bit about our program...

Kindergarten really is a very special place! We love our exciting, theme-based curriculum where we find creative ways to make learning engaging and fun! We switch up our themes almost monthly, keeping our youngest minds excited to be at school and curious about what is next.

Along with the traditional subjects taught in our kindergarten, such as Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and P.E., our days are also filled with:

Bible- we read stories from the Bible and learn about our friend Jesus

Arts and Crafts- what would kindergarten be without all the glue and glitter?

Music- fun worship songs we sing each day as well as a weekly lesson from our music teacher Mrs. Rice where kids experience kinderstrings and singing

American Sign Language- students have an opportunity to learn lots of vocabulary and basic communication skills

Dramatic Play- we often act out stories in our classroom to enhance the Bible story or simply to have fun dressing up and playing with friends

Free choice- time where students get to choose what activities they would like to do or play and make friends along the way

Quiet Time- with a full days Monday through Thursday, these little bodies and minds need time to simply relax a bit and recharge

Theme Topics- each theme offers wonderful learning opportunities into fun areas such as exploring the great outdoors, lots of animals, gardening, construction, ocean life, outer space, and we even take a covered wagon to travel back in time for a bit
